Types of Abortion

Abortion ends a pregnancy through drugs or a surgical procedure. The method used depends on the stage of pregnancy and factors specific to your situation, such as your health history.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

Medical abortion typically involves two drugs. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, and misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. This method is FDA-approved for use up to 10 weeks of gestation.

Abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, which can be significant, will occur.

Possible side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Fever, chills, fatigue, headache

Possible risks include:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Incomplete abortion (requiring follow-up care)
  • Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs do not work

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital using suction and/or instruments. The procedure varies based on gestational age (how far along you are).

Abdominal cramping and spotting or light vaginal bleeding can occur following the procedure.

Possible risks include:

  • Cervical damage
  • Uterine perforation (when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
  • Infection
  • Scar tissue that may affect fertility (Asherman’s syndrome)
  • Incomplete abortion
